59. Power Plant
Built 1892
This was the first Power Plant and later used as a furniture shop and storage

Photograph - Kings Park Heritage Museum

The red brick building is what's left of the power plant and the gray building
is where the boiler room stood

Coal was taken by a barge down the river to where the boats are today and then
transported to the plant
The barge was large with a wooden Captain's House on one end to help
navigate it

The old coal barge can be seen here where it is now part of the dock for the
boaters

Train Tracks were ran and soon engines brought coal cars right up to the bunkers
for the plant
The old coal barge was beached along side the river for many years

This large cinder block building stands on the foundation of the original boiler
room for the power plant

For many years this building was used for storage and also housed the archived
patient records

The Shop was used for furniture work, repairs, upholstery, painting and also to
make mattresses.

There was also a Print Shop, Tin Shop, Social Service and Occupational Therapy
Offices in these buildings
There was a print shop downstairs that they moved to the
upstairs of the storehouse in the late 60's..
Upstairs were the sewing room and mattress shop. Downstairs at the end was the
welding shop before they combined all the Maint. Dept to bldg 5. I also believe
the paint shop was in that area. The building next to it was the shoe repair
shop.
